CROSS CITY TUNNEL(CCT)

The CCT has been designed to remove east-west through traffic and reallocate CBD road space for public transport, cyclists and pedestrian use, providing benefits for reduced congestion by taking up to 90,000 vehicles off surface roads in the city, improved access for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, 18 sets of Tunnel traffic lights and cuts journey time from 20 minutes to 2 minutes. Cross City Motorway Consortium awarded the contract to Baulderstone Hornibrook/Bilfinger Berger (BHBB JV) to design, construct and operate.

Piling works for major civil works involving retaining walls and foundation structures for entry and exit structures, viaducts and vent shafts required a specialist piling contractor with extensive experience, high skill and quality. Construction of piles in the heart of the city with congested heavy traffics, limited space and head room, known and unknown existing services associated with other significant site constraints were challenging hurdles to overcome during piling works. An extensive night time piling operations was carried out to minimise traffic disruption.

Avopiling was engaged, almost for every package of piling works, by BHBB JV and successfully completing the piling works within project target milestones. Notable Piling packages completed by Avopiling are

Secant Pile wall for Vent Shaft – Lot 048
Central Section – Cut and Cover and trough section – Lots 252 and 253
Central section – Burke Street Pile – Lot 352 & Lot 353
West section – Market Street Viaduct – Lot 152
West Section - Harbour Street, Bathurst Street and Druitt Street Piling – Lots 102, 103, 153, 203 and 511
Secant Pile wall for Surface Egress ‘oval’ shape shaft SE7 – installed with CFA technique
Civil Fit out works – CC07 – Directional boring for BH7, BH8 and BH4. Drilling bore holes connecting tunnels were performed from inside tunnel with 6m head room using short mast rig; The holes were raked up to 36.5° from the vertical.

Construction Engineer David Packer wrote “ The performance of Avopiling on site has consistently exceeded expectations in terms of both productivity and quality. All works have been carried out to a high degree of safety in accordance with the exceptional standards demanded on the cross city tunnel project. In particular the company’s safety performance in operating large plant within the restraints of CBD, often adjacent to live pedestrian and vehicular traffic, is commendable. The attitude of workforce has at all times been cooperative and agreeable. A high level pride is taken by all personnel in the quality of work undertaken and the level of service provided. In addition, Avopiling also operates an intensive plant and equipment maintenance program resulting in minimal downtime experienced on site during these works
