Diaphragm Walls
Diaphragm walls are deep retaining structures used on complex underground and top-down construction projects. Constructed using slurry-supported trenching methods, they provide high structural capacity, excellent water control, and stability in dense urban environments.
Application
Diaphragm walls are commonly used for multi-level basements and top-down construction. Excavation is supported using bentonite slurry, which stabilises trench walls during construction and is recycled on site. Concrete is placed via tremie methods, replacing the bentonite and forming a continuous, watertight wall with minimal vertical joints. Diaphragm walls are ideal for deep excavations in urban environments and can be designed to carry permanent structural loads.
Advantages
- Ideal for top-down construction
- Suitable for most soil conditions, including hard rock
- Reduced noise and vibration
- High construction accuracy
- Eliminates the need for dewatering
- Safe near existing structures
- Can reduce overall foundation costs
