Sheet Piling
Sheet piling is a retaining system comprising of overlapping sections of uniform steel sheeting.
Using vibratory hammers ICE 14RF, 416 and PVE 40VML that is adaptable to the LRB255 pile driving rig and is also capable of driving double AZ, PU and GU profile sheets.
Applications
Sheet piles can be used for the construction of retaining walls, temporary shoring, cofferdams, docks, jetties, bridge abutments, flood and ocean protection, cut-off walls, and more. Furthermore sheet piles can either be temporary or permanent depending on the desired application.
Installation of the sheet piles involves using either low or high frequency vibration and is most effective in clays, sands, and clay-sand mixtures due to the comparatively small displacement of the soil.
With the use of modern technologies such as those on the Liebherr 255, guide walls for installation are no longer required as in-built monitoring systems ensure real-time feedback to the operator to observe tolerances and make adjustments as required.
Advantages
- Minimal site preparation.
- Guide wall no longer required.
- Very accurate vertical tolerances.
- Efficient system of changing clamps to match various sheet pile types.
- Very quick and precise construction, especially in loose soils.
- Able to control groundwater.
- Can be extracted and used many times.

Scope of Works
AWD & LHD Ship Sustainment Facilities Project
Project Outline
The project is to enable the berthing of Landing Helicopter Deck (LHD) warships at Fleet Base East (FBE) Wharves 1 to 4 at Garden Island, Woolloomooloo. The project is in two stages, first is the AWD & LHD SPO/TLSF Building then the construction of 4No of Storm Bollards located within Wharves 1-4.
Scope of Works
The works involved were excavating, bored piling, sheetpiling, pile trimming, blinding, steel fixing, formworking, concreting of pile caps including restoration of pavers in surrounding area of pile caps. Piling involves installation of 4No. 1350mmØ bored raked piles for each storm bollard pile caps with permanent casings ranging from 15 to 32 metres long and drill depths from 17 to 45 metres.
Royal Shore Ermington
Project Outline
Royal Shores Ermington is a residential development project comprising of Lots 301-302, 303-304, 305 and 306. These lots will house medium rise buildings with two basement car parks. The sites are situated next to the Parramatta River and required 6.00 meters of excavation to create the basement structures.
Scope of Works
Avopiling was awarded the contract by Dasco Australia to design and construct the foundation piles and install sheet piles. Sheetpiles are double AZ20-700 to lengths ranging from 12 to 25 metres and with a total area of 15,000 square meters.
Foundation piles are mostly drilled displacement piles ranging from 450mmØ to 610mmØ to depths of 16.00 to 25.00 metres. CFA Piles 750mmØ and 900mmØ to depths of 22.00 meters and UC steel columns with lengths from 18 to 21 meters were also installed as part of the foundation piles.
Drilled displacement piles on crtical sections were subjected to PDA test and showed positive results.
